TNT ERST joins the Cleaning day in the Gambia
04 March 2009
So Saturday was a National Cleaning Day! As explained in Roberto`s last story , in the Gambia, the last Saturday of the month is dedicated to cleaning and to reducing pollution. No trafic is allowed between 8 am and 13 pm! All businesses and shops are closed and every citizen is expected to clean the areas to their vicinity. This is a very innovative exercice initiated 6 years ago and we have been told that other African countries have followed the Gambian initiative. It was very touching indeed to see our neighbourhood steaming with people cleaning the streets and burning off dead leaves ( perhaps unwittingly increasing co2 emissions!). In order not to be outdone, Roberto and i joined the cleaning teams at the beach and we were happy to contribute to the national wide cleaning exercice.
Monday marked the beginning of our second week on the ground. We have been getting appointments with government authorities without major hassles however the only issue that has become our major concern is the lack of recorded information and data. It would appear that the culture of data collection and recording does not play an signicant role in the determination of day to day running of the economy and the peoples lives.
Certainly this realisation has only made us to double our efforts in trying to gather information and encourage data storage processes within the government departments. This week we have programmed meetings with the Aviation and the Ports Authorities.
more to follow....
