Visiting the Port of Mombasa
Sunday, 21 Jun 2009
After two excellent but still tiring flights I arrived in Mombasa and soon found a very friendly WFP driver to take me to the Nyali Beach hotel just around the corner from the WFP offices. At the hotel Simon currently the man in charge at the office of WFP in Mombasa gave me a warm welcome.
After freshening-up, what can be better than windsurfing on bright blue water, I had my first visit to the Port of Mombasa. The port is real hectic with high volumes of aid moving through but at a relatively slowly pace. I was shown around by the Port Captain and got a lot of general info on how the Port of Mombasa is being operated. Waiting times are up to 10 days and unloading and certainly loading the ship takes more than a week with current equipment.
This first encounter with Africa really opened my eyes. Culture is very different and it will be a nice challenge to drive change in the Port. Yet it is eminent that current processes are far from optimal. All the hundreds of drivers waiting and possibly many supervisors would not exactly be required from a TNT Lean manpower planning perspective. Yet this is organised by third parties and culture is not to be changed overnight.
This morning an in-dept visit to the potential new facility on the Agenda.

Visit WFP Mombasa
Submitted on June 22nd, 2009 by Perry (not verified)Ed, good to hear that you arrived safe and that the local people gave you a warm welcome. We had a excellent weekend in Holland lot's of rain expected but we got sunshine instead. Today back in the office in Hoofddorp.
From your early comments i understead that there are probably lots of opportunities for you and our Material Handling Solutions team to help the local team to further improve their Operations. I fully agree to your point on the cultural aspects and indeed we should be careful and not push "our solutions" to fast. Lets create something that the local team is fully committed to and involved in even if it takes more time.
Please say hello to Martin when you meet him later today.
Trust we will hear from you soon and take care!
