Working discipline, space utilisation and inventive business men

Businessmen used this chance to step into a lucrative business renting out warehouse space outside the port. Unfortunately these warehouses are difficult to reach due to congestion (chickens crossing) and bad or actually no roads at all which causes major logistical inefficiencies.
The single fully equipped bulk handling company, GBHL, has too little capacity to deal with the increased throughput. Currently the alternative is to step back to a slow bagging operation by the port authority on other quays and use conventional grap unloaders to unload the ships. This operation will lead to a much longer berth time and thus higher cost.
After discussions with the people from WFP and another visit to the port the conclusion was that the solution which should be further investigated would be in two directions: A new WFP warehouse in the Port and a WFP controlled efficient bagging operation close to the quayside. Together with an office on the Port’s premises this would be a major step forwards to a lean and more effective operation.
So far the project related stuff, tomorrow will already be my last day of this tremendous experience in Kenya. I’m sad to leave this wonderful place behind. It would be great if this plan could be put together within reasonable time. That’s what amazes me most. Kenya’s mentality seems to be that of sprinting a marathon with 50 kg on your head (see video) while some plans can move very slow or get stuck in bureaucracy for ever.
