‘This money will really make a difference to the lives of so many children,' said WFP representative Laura Melo, who was on hand at the TNT Annual Senior Management Meeting in Paris to receive the check from Moving the World Programme Director Ludo Oelrich. In his opening speech, Oelrich remarked that he had been ‘nervous' that it would be difficult to beat 2004's fantastic result. ‘But our employees never cease to amaze me with their creativity and dedication,' said Oelrich.
Walk the Wing
TNT Logistics UK has taken its Moving the World fundraising activities to new heights. On 21 July, 10 daring TNTers took turns strapping themselves to the top of two bi-planes, zooming over England's green and pleasant pastures to raise 12,000 sterling (€17,000) for the WFP. The planes were supplied by the Aerosuperbatics Display Team. The UK logistics team continues to build on its reputation as a true leader among TNT Business Units when it comes to creative fundraising. In 2004, BU employees jumped into a bobsleigh with the British Olympic team to raise 14,000 euro for WFP's School Feeding projects. However, this year's event may be difficult to top. Commenting on what can only be described as a hair-raising experience, event organiser Simon Boggis said: 'None of us will ever think of flying in the same way again. This was an incredible, awesome, once in a lifetime challenge, we all loved every minute of it and we are proud as a team to do this in the name of TNT and Moving the World'.
Dam-tot-Dam loop
The annual Dam-tot-Dam loop ("From dam to dam walk") is the largest as well as one of the most attractive running events in the Netherlands. More than 30,000 people walk or run the characteristic 16 KM (10 mile) course, which goes from the centre of Amsterdam to the centre of Zaandam, which they have to complete within two hours from the starting line. Sunday September 18 our colleagues from the TNT Group Strategy department and friends successfully completed the Dam-tot-Dam loop. With the help of an enthusiastic audience and sunny and dry weather they all finished the run within the two hour time limit. Of course they weren't just running for their health. They drummed up enough sponsors to raise over €15.000, which will be spent on WFP school feeding projects. This means almost 400 children will be able to have access to food, medication and school for an entire year.
Duck Race
At the end of day's work, on Thursday, 22 September, the second annual duck race was held at TNT head office in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. More than 400 ducks raced across the pond in front of the office building cheered on by a hundred TNT ‘mums and dads'. By sponsoring a duck for 4 euros each, employees of TNT could support TNT's fundraising programme with the WFP to feed hungry children in the world. The aim was to get your duck across the water outside the TNT Head Office without getting stuck in the reeds. The first duck reaching the other side wins. The competition consisted of two races: there were 44 veterans (ducks from last year's competition) in the first and 370 new ducks in the second race. Anne Runneson won the first race with her duck number 413. The winner of the second race and a brand new iPod was Alexander Beelen with duck number 259. In the end the ducks swam together €1,223 for the WFP! The race even made it into the local newspapers.
