- In February, a group of TNT Post employees asked artistically talented TNTers to create "exclusive" works of art for auction. The works of 33 TNTers were then displayed and auctioned at the famous Café Gallery Dante in Amsterdam. The money raised - over €5,000 - was given to the WFP in Malawi (the twin of TNT Benelux).
- In April, one of the team from TNT Freight Management Denmark convinced Sir Bob Geldof, who was speaking at the Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development (DIHAD) event, to sign Walk the World T-shirts and TNT giveaways. The precious celebrity goods were then auctioned to the highest bidder.
- May is the time for the biggest fundraiser of them all - the annual worldwide Walk the World event. Fundraising events took place at TNT's offices around the world. In the week before the walk 4,000 TNT Express employees (mostly from Loading Bank Operatives) in the UK wore pedometers for five days to walk the equivalent of the circumference of the earth - an amazing 75,000,000 steps! Others dressed up as pirates or took revenge on their bosses by pelting them with soggy sponges or locking them in stocks, and there was even a noodle-scoffing competition. One of the more impressive achievements was a TNT specialist, on assignment in Tanzania, taking on the challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro - ascending more than 1,000 metres a day over five days. In all, TNT employees raised €780,000 for Walk the World.
- By the end of the year, the ideas were still going strong. In October, the Freight Management division sacrificed their waistlines to organise a worldwide charity dinner across all of TNT's Freight Management countries. Suppliers and customers were invited and the dinners raised €125,000 for the WFP. All the proceeds generated from the charity dinner went WFP to be used to eradicate poverty and hunger. Funds were raised through ticket sales, auctions, lotteries and many other activities.
By inviting our suppliers we also introduced and invited them to join us in the fight against hunger. It is self-evident that multinational companies have a responsibility to commit making the world a better place for all people. In addition, the charity dinners have been very much appreciated by our suppliers and it certainly improves our long-term business relations. -Jeff Hoogesteger, CEO of TNT Freight Management
- Several TNT Post employees held a day of fasting in November to raise more than €3,000. As the Christmas rush hit, TNT Post Parcel Service in Zwolle, the Netherlands, invited friends and family to work an evening shift in the sorting centre. The saved salary costs were donated to the WFP. Rumour has it that CEO Peter Bakker was among the participants!
