Reflection on 3 months in WFP Zambia

Monday, 05 Jan 2009
Written by Veron Janssen
“I raised a PO for our DSA for the FT of this week to one of our IP’s, but the CD and the DCD are out so they cannot sign the PO”. Not too long ago this was just as much like ‘abracadabra’ to me as it is to most of you readers now, but after three and a half months as an intern within the World Food Programme I kind of get the hang in it. My 6 months internship being already halfway, I feel the urge to reflect on the three months that have passed. The workload is low this week due to the holidays, so enough time available for this reflective update.

Please come in!

The Walvis Bay Wellness Centre has officially been opened on World AIDS day 2008! Now sitting at Johannesburg airport, I am going back to Amsterdam today; I cannot believe how fast time went in the last few weeks… I can now look backwards, without any regrets, being very sad though, Namibia is a wonderful country! So many things have happened, the clinic has been successfully launched and so many other activities have taken place…

Feeding Congo

1600 km above me there are tens of thousand of people on the run from the bloodshed in North Kivu. WFP Zambia where I am doing an internship with TNT’s global experience programme, is trying to feed its northern neighbour. The situation is dire, we have to act now. The problem is availability of food in the region.

Namibia and AIDS, initiatives of the community and how to handle the biggest problem of the country…

Friday, 21 Nov 2008
My assignment in Namibia is going on, it’s been now a bit more than four weeks and the project has been evolving a lot, satisfying changes, it’s such a world and such a task to work in the HIV/AIDS world and to realize how people try to solve this problem. The Wellness Center in Walvis Bay will be launched on the first of December, and still a lot to achieve but motivation is there and will be there thanks to people’s help and support as well as various other impressive initiatives around AIDS prevention.

First week in Namibia, getting on the right track for the long run…

Monday, 27 Oct 2008
I arrived in Namibia a week ago and it’s been quite hectic to start up on the assignment. After a quiet and sightseeing week-end, I met a lot of key people who will help us out to raise funds locally. So many people are very enthusiastic about the project which really motivates me to do my best and get the wellness center running properly!
