Awareness and Fundraising

The Spring Challenge

Spring is a Joint Venture Company, owned by three shareholders, Singapore Post, Royal Mail and the majority owner TNT. We are a relatively small company, fully focused on International, cross border business mail and we operate in some 40 countries worldwide with around 1500 employees. We have a proud history of involvement with the WFP partnership ranging from local fund raising activities through to encouraging and supporting employees to become school feeding volunteers.

At our annual company conference we have always put time aside to review what we can do for WFP in the coming year. At the conference this year we had an engaging presentation from Lizette Thiart, Lizette works in Spring South Africa and had just completed a School Feeding assignment in Tanzania. Lizette, along with her colleagues in Spring South Africa issued a challenge to the rest of Spring, that challenge was simple, a competition to see which Spring country could raise the most money on behalf of the WFP. The prize – a case of first class South African wine.

The theme of conference was competition, so the idea of a competition which would also benefit WFP was well received, especially with the renewal of the WFP partnership – we felt it was a good time to “re-energise” our efforts and remind everyone that the fight against hunger is still urgent and essential. We also focused on the “Red Cup” as a strong and simple symbol of how small efforts can make a significant difference.

The challenge was taken up in Spring and the leading contender at this point is Spring Canada. Driven by a desire to help raise money, and of course, a desire to win the competition they created a strong programme of employee involvement supporting a wide range of fundraising events all designed to motivate and engage people with the key focus on raising money. So far they have managed to raise just over 5000 Euros, for a relatively small team of around 60 people this is a great achievement.

The race is on now within the rest of Spring, the team in Canada have set a very high target and the competition will run until the end of November – so the other Spring countries still have time to mount a serious challenge. Our objectives are simple: we want to continue to promote the WFP cause, to engage and motivate our Spring people, to have some fun and of course to make sure that the real winners are the children – its our goal to try and fill 100,000 red cups.
