Road Safety – Training of Driver Trainers

Road Safety is a real concern faced by members of the humanitarian community, as travelling in a vehicle is the most dangerous activity faced by field workers today. More than 25% of all deaths suffered by aid workers are a result of accidental causes, of which the vast majority is vehicle-related.

In order to reduce the number of road accidents TNT, together with WFP, developed a Training of Driver training. The concept of a ToT was specifically chosen to empower senior drivers and to make sure that WFP country offices could conduct driver trainings in-house.

The result is a 4-day training course which not only focuses on the theory of safe and defensive driving but also teaches driving techniques such as 4W-Driving, conducting daily vehicle checks and driving in difficult circumstances.

The selected drivers had to put their learning’s directly into practice as each participant had to facilitate a 10-minute training.

Drivers have been trained as a Trainer in the following countries: Kenya, Sri Lanka, Uganda and Yemen.

In the beginning of 2008 TNT has handed this project over to WFP – FESO in Dubai which are now rolling it out to WFP country offices.
