Between 24 August and 6 September Haiti was hit by four hurricanes. The devastating storms had an enormous impact on the country and people of Haiti, submerging vast areas of the island, destroying nearly all of Haiti’s agriculture, damaging thousands of buildings and affecting the lives of 170,000 families.
Upon request of WFP, a Logistics Emergency Team - consisting of three Emergency Response Team members from TNT and two employees from UPS - was deployed to the storm-ravaged island to assist them in Field Logistics.
From 22 September until 19 October, TNT employees Rachel Timmerman, Cisse Amadou and Frank Moltini were an important link in the huge relief operation set up by several humanitarian organizations. The ERT members supported WFP in general logistics, airport co-ordination and overall co-ordination. Their expertise and enthusiasm was much needed and although they had to work under dangerous and difficult circumstances, they have done an amazing job.
During his stay in Haiti, Frank Moltini wrote:
We are confronted with an indescribable amount of poverty and completely destroyed areas. People are stranded at the roof of their houses. Hundreds of people are lining up every single day to get their food at the distribution points. Many people are still buried under the ruins or lying dead in the water. It really hurts us deep in our hearts to see all this. Until now we saw this kind of situation only on TV. To see it in real is tough, very tough… But we’ll keep our HANDS ON!
