A Box Filled with Hope

In one of our visit to El Cielo, one of the three schools where we are working, I met a child, and the truth is that it is impossible not to fall in love with every one of the children at these schools. His name is Inder, he is five years old and in first grade, even though for his age he should be in Kindergarten. He lives with his grandmother, aunts, and uncles because his mother left him with his grandmother when he was a baby.

To assure the delivery of the food, WFP in Burkina Faso has a logistics team of 8 persons in the country office in Ouagadougou and logistical assistants in the sub-offices of Dori and Fada ‘n Gourma. The food is stored in warehouses in 6 different places (Ouaga, Dori, Gorom, Fada, Gaoua, Ouahigouya) that have a total capacity of 21.000 tons.

The last couple minutes pass slowly, time bends and the pressure is high. People are breathing heavily and sweet is running down every part of our body...

Then, finally, we are released, the whistle blows and it is certain:

WFP wins the soccer championship on UN Day beeting UNDP and the Worldbank.

Logistics Lessons

Going in the field with logistics is a whole different experience than visiting health centers for the program section! But, definitely not less interesting!! We went on a three day mission to Dori and Gorom, in the North of Burkina. WFP has 5 warehouses and a sub-office in Dori and a small warehouse in Gorom. Being new in logistics, I imagined that warehousing couldn't be that difficult; just order the bags of food properly and clean the warehouse. I was definitely wrong with that....unloading and loading trucks, First-in-First-out system, goods that are not supposed to be stored together, etc!

Taxi Talk

We are about to leave Koro - 12 people finally squeezed into a tiny mini-van which will not start by itself. So we all get out in order to push the vehicle together. Looked at from the outside, it is easy to understand why the old Suzuki has problems starting.

It has had a long hard life, even before coming to West-Africa. Here its life has become even harder, with a huge current roof-load that contains the usual baggage, wooden boxes, big sacs of cereals, 2 mofas, 2 goats and a sheep. The traces of the vehicle's long and hard life can be found everywhere. The windshield is cracked several times and it's a static miracle that it is still in its place. Two of the three doors only close with the help of a piece of string. The seats for the passengers are wooden benches in the back of the vehicle.

  thank you

First time I read this letter I couldn't say anything. All of my weary and hard times during my volunteer assignment all disappeared. Now they are the best of my unforgettable memories and this appreciation letter is better than any money can buy.
