TNT representatives tour CRR

Five delegates from Thomas Nationwide Transport (TNT) in Germany, France and Italy have completed a two-day tour of the Central River Region. The organization has been working in the Gambia in collaboration with the World Food Program (WFP) since 2002; providing financial assistance for the purchase of the food commodities for school children in the country.

TNT has also provided funds for the construction of water wells with hand pumps, kitchens with fuel saving stoves and pit latrines for schools in regions 3, 4 and 5.
 
In Region 5, the TNT delegation officially handed over two completed kitchens to the Njogen Basic Cycle and Saare Louba Lower Basic School.
The regional education director in Region 5, Babucarr Suwareh, who presented the keys of the kitchens to the two schools encouraged the communities to take ownership of the kitchens.
He said TNT and WFP had played their part and it is left to the communities to do theirs. Suwareh thanked the two organizations for what he called their human gesture. He said the government of The Gambia has recognized the role the WFP and TNT are playing in the education sector of the country.
 
Grace Njie, a representative of the WFP in The Gambia – who was also with the TNT team during the tour – said her organization in partnership with TNT has built 14 toilets, 3 hand pump wells, 3 classroom blocks and many kitchens.
 
The delegation also visited Changel Basic Cycle, Sukuta Lower Basic and Sinchu Gundo school to see the possibilities of helping them in certain areas.
 
The TNT delegation comprises of Ousmane Sarr and Dominique Mamcarz of France; Monica Lutz and Alexander Stukenberg of Germany; and Stefania Lallai of Italy.

The organization has been working in the Gambia in collaboration with the World Food Program (WFP) since 2002; providing financial assistance for the purchase of the food commodities for school children in the country.

TNT transports computers to school Nairobi

Among the ICT equipment were more than 40 DELL monitors, 18 computers, 3 printers, a scanner and a fax machine. Also included were many useful books for the school children. TNT took care of the transportation of the material to Nairobi. From there, the equipment was moved to the Galilee school.

The aim of my assignment was to evaluate, monitor and develop the newly started Customer Service Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, which is focusing on the Humanitarian Air Services operating in Somalia and give Customer Service training to air operations staff.

Send a Shipment - Make a Difference

Part of the objective of the campaign is to raise awareness amongst customers about the support TNT gives to the World Food Programme and to raise money for WFP’s School Feeding programme. TNT will donate €2 to WFP for every shipment that is send using 12:00 Express and 12:00 Economy Express between now and January 31st 2009.

TNT moves biscuits to flooded Bihar, India

TNT is moving 127 MT of food items (High Energy biscuits) to Araria. The original plan to move another 125 MT of food items to Supaul has been discarded since this district cannot be reached by road at the moment.

The establishment of Roadside Wellness Centres

On an average truck stop in Kenya, hundreds of trucks are parked overnight. As soon as the sun sets, these truck stops turn into small bustling towns, where the truckers can do whatever they need to unwind: Have a meal, drink a beer and meet up with one of the local women. Simon is married, but has several ‘girlfriends’ along the route.

From Indonesia to Guatemala, more than 250,000 people in 70 countries participated in End Hunger: Walk the World yesterday. Walks were held in over 250 locations across 24 time zones.

1.2 million (ONE POINT TWO MILLION!!!) people die each year in a traffic accident. To me that is a shocking number, especially because you don't hear about it so much. And the estimation is that this number goes up if there is no action taken!

 

'Together for Child Vitality' partnership launched

The World Food Programme (WFP) and Unilever Ghana Limited have launched in the Unilever-WFP "Together for Child Vitality" partnership to raise awareness of the importance of child nutrition for growth and development. The three-year WFP/Unilever collaboration, earlier launched globally in 2006, covers advocacy, support to School Feeding Programmes, marketing of blended foods, technical support to agro processors and support to WFP's vegetable oil procurement.

TNT sends 700 backpacks to school children in Bhutan

Some of the backpacks have now been handed out to children at WFP’s schools. One school that has benefitted from this is Zham Community Primary School in Eastern Bhutan. This school has a total of 66 students who walk at an average of 2 hours one way to get to school.

ERT members return from storm-hit Haiti: Mission completed!

Between 24 August and 6 September Haiti was hit by four hurricanes. The devastating storms submerged vast areas of the island, destroyed thousands of buildings and affected the lives of 170,000 families. Haiti will suffer the effects of Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike for months and even years to come.

Since 15 August, the Caribbean has been affected successively by a tropical storm and three hurricanes. The storms affected more than 2.8 million people and claimed more than 350 lives so far.

The Spring Challenge

At our annual company conference we have always put time aside to review what we can do for WFP in the coming year. At the conference this year we had an engaging presentation from Lizette Thiart, Lizette works in Spring South Africa and had just completed a School Feeding assignment in Tanzania.

Update on relief activities Myanmar – June 9, 2008

Since last week Thursday David Tan, TNT Operations Manager from Singapore, is in Myanmar to help with warehouse coordination. David takes over the coordination of Agility’s Frank Clary, who has been in the country on behalf of the LET since the beginning of May.

The step that got the world walking keeps up the beat

On the first day of June 2008, at 6 a.m., concerned groups in the Philippines will gather at the open field of Bonifacio Global City in Taguig for ‘End Hunger: Walk the World' global effort.

End Hunger: Walk the World 2008 rallies thousands of people around the world to walk across 24 time zones within 24 hours to put an end to child hunger.

All of this began with Peter Bakker who dreamed of starting a massive global effort to eradicate child hunger. Read the full story here
