Part of TNT’s work is to raise awareness of the WFP and its work among children. Kids Moving the World is an educational game for children in primary schools in the Netherlands which addresses hunger issues.
The Kids Moving the World package has been created by TNT with educational experts and consists of three lessons and a game. The lesson teaches children about hunger and poverty of kids their age in developing countries. It comes with a teaching manual and is guided by a teacher.
The interactive game encourages children to work in teams to help improve the lives of the children in countries which lack food. The school children must take on tasks such as building schools, hospitals and introducing school feeding to overcome local hunger. The chosen countries are Cambodia, Nicaragua and Tanzania – the bases of the TNT / WFP School Feeding Programme. TNT has trained its own employees to act as “Game Guides” who visit schools to play the game in class.
Launched in 2004, Kids Moving the World has been a big hit among teachers, students and TNT employees alike. Teachers have applauded the high quality content and format, and the interactive game element. Game Guides describe the programme as a challenging and rewarding way to contribute to the fight against hunger.
Every year, approximately 2300 classes participate in the programme. Last year, the 150.000th child completed the lesson package. This happy event was appropriately celebrated together with famous Dutch children's heroes like Idol Jamai and actress Nicolette van Dam.
Raising awareness on hunger and informing school kids in the Netherlands on the situation of kids their age in developing countries, gives the children a broader perspective. This game does so in a fun way. It often results in organising a fancy fair or a sponsor walk to raise funds themselves. - Caroline Bakker, TNT
