Making sure we can: MtW Strategy 2010-2015

Over the years, TNT as well as WFP have evolved and developed. WFP’s mission has developed from Food Aid to Food Assistance. TNT implemented changes in its structure and strategy; we exited the logistics division, expanded our business to new regions and emerging markets. We also extended our Corporate Responsibility commitments to our employees, the environment and our customers. The changes and developments have reduced the link between TNT’s business and the Moving the World programme.

The evolution within TNT and WFP requires the partnership to develop into a next phase as well. In the coming years, we will tighten the fit between the partnership and TNT’s business. We will develop the partnership into a two-way and flexible collaboration which can function on local, regional and global level, and which is integrated with the business and adds value to TNT.

The Moving the World programme continues to support WFP in its efforts to fight hunger, but we will implement a slight change of course in which we will:

-    Centralise our support to WFP around the projects which call upon our core skills and expertise. Our business has given us unique knowledge in areas of distribution, supply chains, process improvement, customers, engaging employees and environmental issues. With this knowledge we can help WFP to achieve their long term objectives.**
-    In these projects, our knowledge is not simply transferred to WFP. The partnership will develop into a two-way street instead where TNT and WFP people will complement each other’s strengths and gain knowledge and experience which can be applied back in their day-to-day work; a place of learning and development for both WFP staff and TNT employees and management.
-    The twinning programme, where TNT regions were twinned with 5 WFP countries, will be broadened into a programme where TNT countries and business units can choose themselves what to twin with: a WFP country, a specific region, Emergency Response, a project or even a North Star wellness centre.
-    With that, we will shift our focus from fundraising to awareness and advocacy activities. Fundraising should become the result of awareness initiatives, not a goal in itself.

Supporting WFP with projects which match our skills and capabilities, leveraging the skills of TNT and WFP employees and extending the choice of twinning possibilities will put the partnership back in the heart of our business. An unambiguous raison d’être provides the partnership with a clear added value to the company which will in turn enhance the engagement of employees and management across TNT.

In 2010, we will focus our activities to support WFP on

  • Emergency Response, including support during relief operations, Logistics Emergency Teams and disaster preparedness
  • Process improvement, including supply chain optimisation, transport cost optimisation, end-to-end process improvement, and service quality improvement.
  • Broadening the partnership at regional levels; involving the regional structure of both WFP and TNT in the partnership
  • Engagement; load the TNT brand and inspire and engage employees
  • Climate change adaptation; support WFP’s strategy in minimising the impact of climate change on hunger
  • Environmental Management System; supporting WFP’s Climate Neutral programme

We will structure our support under our four, slightly revised, pillars:

  • Sharing knowledge and skills: Optimising WFP processes and operations using TNT core skills.
  • Emergency Response: Supporting WFP in its emergency preparedness and response to ensure quicker and more efficient emergency logistics.
  • Advocacy & Engagement: Keep hunger on the global agenda and engage TNT employees as well as the general public.
  • Building partnerships: Develop multi stakeholder partnerships which will support WFP’s long term objectives.

The overall goals of the partnership are to support WFP, to engage employees in all possible ways, to develop the skills of both WFP staff and TNT employees and to ensure optimal usage of the acquired knowledge within both organisations.

* Moving the World fulfilled all of its objectives to different degrees:
1. Improving logistics efficiency
2. Saving & improving lives
3. Funding
4. Reputation-building

** Long term objectives WFP:
1. Save lives and protect livelihoods in emergencies
2. Prevent acute hunger and invest in disaster preparedness and mitigation measures
3. Restore and rebuild lives and livelihoods in post-conflict, post-disaster or transition situations
4. Reduce chronic hunger and under-nutrition
5. Strengthen the capacities of countries to reduce hunger, including through hand-over strategies and local purchase
