To date we have not received any information regarding the injury or death of any of our TNT colleagues. Today TNT Chile will try to determine the impact to the employees and to secure their clients’ shipments.
The rest of the depots in Chile remain intact and secure.
The closest major city to the epicenter of the earthquake is Concepcion. The TNT Operations Manager from Concepcion has confirmed that neither their fleet nor their building suffered any damage. The freight inside the depot is in good condition; however, there have been riots and looting in the nearby area. Security is on-site, but they cannot protect the building from a large mob.
The government of Chile has made a formal request for international assistance. It’s most likely that WFP will get in action to provide food for the people affected by the earthquake. It’s too early to tell if TNT is going to play a role in the relief activities.
