TNT’s donation of both money and personnel played an invaluable role in making the emergency response a success. –Ken Davies, WFP Representative Mozambique

Mozambique was hit by major flooding in the center of the country as a result of heavy seasonal rains in neighbouring countries combined with high levels of rainfall in Mozambique. Approximately 102,000 people were displaced from their homes and a total of 258,000 lost their main harvest in the floodwaters. The flooding hit some of the poorest and most vulnerable communities, where access to social services is limited.
Based in the town of Caia, WFP’s helicopter delivered food and non-food supplies on behalf of the entire humanitarian community to displaced people in inaccessible resettlement areas. WFP also delivered food assistance by road and carried out rescue and evacuation operations with a barge and boats.

TNT’s Emergency Response Team member Jan-Maarten Gerritse spent five weeks in the flood zone in the Zambezi river Valley to support WFP in their emergency operation. With commitment, a positive attitude and a tireless energy he coordinated river operations for the entire humanitarian community.
