TNT’s core business –transporting goods by truck or airplane from A to B– contributes to CO2 emissions that harm our world. The transport business as a whole accounts for almost 22% of the worldwide CO2 emissions output.
TNT’s environmental program, Planet Me, was born to address sustainable initiatives in order to mitigate and reduce the negative impact of our company’s CO2 emissions. Within this program, we work together with our network: employees, customers, subcontractors, the government and NGO’s, to take action and make a difference for the future of our planet.
How do we do it?
We focus on “greening up” our global operations and we want to become the world’s first zero-emission transport company.
We have identified electric vehicles as the most effective way to minimise the carbon impact of our Pickup and Delivery (PUD) operations in urban areas; and the use of green Compressed Natural Gas is another promising option for our inner-city transport activities.
Our aim with City Logistics is to deliver smart zero emission solutions to customers in city locations and to improve sustainability in inner cities by reducing emissions, daytime noise and congestion while protecting TNT's value. Several projects are currently being piloted in a number of European cities.
Our new corporate head office, the TNT Centre is an emission free building and is a great example of collaborative innovation. The office only uses sustainable materials, it maximises the use of daylight and all remaining energy is sustainably generated on-site using cold/heat storage and a second–generation biodiesel generator.
Improving CO2 efficiency is no catch phrase
TNT’s objective is to improve its CO2 efficiency by 40% in 2020. So far we have made a good start. There is still a long way to go, but the commitment is here to stay and we are on our way.
We want our employees to participate. TNT has a large driver population and these drivers contribute to our success with their “right foot”. Their driving behaviour has a big impact on our business. We calculated that some drivers could improve their fuel efficiency and decrease CO2 emissions by up to 25%, so we started the Drive Me Challenge.
Join our efforts and share with us your comments and ideas. Our environmental program is a collaborative initiative and you also can be part of it.
