As the partnership has matured, TNT and WFP have agreed to work closer together in a number of areas that allows both organisations to act more responsible and which allows for sustainable aid and assistance. Occasionally this also brings along working in close cooperation with other companies or organisations.
In this area of sustainable support TNT and WFP are currently exploring opportunities for farmers to grow biological energy crops which will generate additional sustainable incomes as well as provide more sustainable energy sources.
WFP and TNT are committed to help secure the long-term future of vulnerable communities by assisting them in a responsible and sustainable way.
The Jatropha seed is planted directly in the ground, and after 15 months of growing the tree will flower and fruit. When mature, the fruit (nuts) is harvested and de-shelled. The nuts are taken to the collection centre and there the nut is heated and crushed to expel the crude oil. Then the crude oil is turned into bio-diesel and glycerine, which can be used to make candles, soap and cosmetics. The process is complete in about 17 months. more
